Single Mom Changing the World for Herself and Her Daughter

Kamala did not have the opportunity to attend school due to poor economic conditions. Her family struggled even just ensuring they ate at least a meal a day. She got married at the age of fifteen with a man more than half of her age, and who was alcoholic and abusive. Her husband left her after she gave birth to her baby girl. Being a young single mother, she had to do work hard just so she can support her daughter.

Fortunate Encounter

Gashangtar dreamed of becoming a teacher. However, she had to drop school after graduating from junior high. Her mother wasn't in good health and their income was not enough to continue sending her to school. She stayed at home to help with the housework and to graze the animals.

Bringing Hope and Change to Lhamo

Lhamo is one of the current trainees at the My First Job Program. Although she admits that she learns at a relatively slower pace than the rest of the women, she is determined on improving herself. One of our staff, Francine, went to visit and chat with her to see how she's doing in the program.

Tailoring Skills Training Providing Steady Income

Dechin's father was a self-taught tailor. It was through making clothes that her father got them through some of the most difficult times in their lives. One of which was when her mother had a back surgery. However, the monthly medication afterwards was too costly and their earnings were barely enough.

Gaining Experience and Making Memories

Sonam is part of the Vocational School Scholarship Program (VSS). One of the best things about the VSS project, aside from giving these girls the opportunity for their dreams to come true, is that they also gain experiences in extracurricular activities and make memories they will remember for a long time. Sonam shares her experience with us.

Uma's Cow

Uma lives in the Chitwan district. It is the home to various ethnicity but the majority of the people living in this area are the Dalits and Janajatis. These people are considered as low caste people. The majority of them are poor because they don’t own any land and cannot get loans leaving these women open to the lure of traffickers and their false stories of money and a good life.

In my uneducated state, it is difficult for me to find a place to work to earn sufficient money. Clothes are needed by each of us. I joined the Husky Energy Tailoring Skills for Women Program in July 2019. This was my opportunity to change the future for my family.

Cherishing New Opportunities
