Preying on Girls through Social Media

Kalindi (name changed for privacy and protection) dropped out of school after 6th grade and has since spent most of her time at home, unemployed.

One day, she was introduced to Eknash, an Indian man who leaved in another village nearby. They would have long conversations on Facebook everyday until finally, they fell in love and eloped. When they came near the border, a member of our partners 3 Angels Nepal team intercepted them suspecting, from observation, that Kalindi was at high risk of being trafficked. She refused to say anything at first but after hearing proper counselling, she shared in detail her relationship with Eknash and how they met.

Both were taken to the police station for further investigation where it was revealed that Eknash was already married and has 3 children. Kalindi wept regretting her decision to elope with a stranger. Our partner’s staff counselled her and contacted her parents. They didn’t know about Kalindi’s relationship with the man and was thankful that their daughter was saved from someone who was highly likely in the process of trafficking her out of the country. Eknash was kept in police custody for further investigation.
