Three precious months have passed since the second batch of Husky Energy (now a member of the Cenovus group of companies) Tailoring Skills Program for Women started. Twenty-nine trainees, composed of young women and mothers, are now ready to start anew with their acquired skills.
My name is Lhamotso and I am 22 years old. I have had very little education and so I have never had a job where I can earn a good income. My family rely on our livestock to survive but last winter was really heavy snow and five of our cattle were trapped. We couldn’t do anything about it. This devastated my family.
Xiangdong's family is particularly poor in the village. He and his younger brother were raised by their loving grandparents. However, the future was uncertain for both of them.
Earlier in August, the second round of Husky Energy (now a member of the Cenovus group of companies) Tailoring Skills program started. More than halfway into the program and we have seen great progress no only in the trainees' sewing skills, but also in their attitude towards learning.
The first batch of My First Job trainees have graduated in August. After 90 days of training, they have learned the basic skills of cooking as well as various dishes to help them as they start on their new careers.
We proudly share with you these captured moments from the women's graduation.
Huaifeng's home is on a remote hillside, and it takes her more than an hour of walking before she can ride a bus to school. Her mother left them when she was only one year old, while her father is working as a security guard in another city. She lives with her brother and her grandparents. Any support she receives is a great help for her to finish her studies.
My name is Tsedan and I am 29 years old. I missed out on going to school because my parents thought that boys are more important than girls. Now that I have my own family, I want my three children to be able to go to school - an opportunity that I didn’t have.
